Playing as a seeded team at the state tennis tournament for the first time, Hopkinsville High’s Ella Lester and Allie Fort played the part, winning their first two games Tuesday and advancing to the Round of 16 for the second straight year.
The Hoptown duo opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Region 16 semifinalists Isabella Mayhorn and Regan Hayes in a match that took just 40 minutes to play at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex at the University of Kentucky.
In the second round, they took down Elizabethtown’s Lydia Proctor and Elinor Troutt 6-1, 6-1.
Lester and Fort will take a 14-2 record into Wednesday morning’s match against unbeaten Gracie Koch and Avery Voss. The Sacred Heart duo is the tournament’s second seed. Voss played in last year’s state championship with another partner.
