University Heights Academy’s 1600-meter relay team had been strong all season – setting a school record at the Area 1 Championship that they thought would set them up for a region-winning performance. However, an iffy handoff and a hobbled runner resulted in a third-place finish and a time that was six seconds off their best time.

That made up for it and more Thursday at the Clark’s Pump and Shop Class 1A State Track and Field Meet in Lexington.

The team of Trey Wallace, Cam Brown, Griffin McCoy, and Clayton Lester ran a lap that added up to 3:29.28 to win the state title and knocked a second and a half off their previous school record best.

Set up by strong legs by Lester to open and then Wallace, McCoy gave Brown a 15-yard lead for the final lap. Brown, who finished third in the 400-meter run earlier in the day with a time of 50.3 seconds, ran a 49.8 last lap to give the Blazers the relay win.

Three of the five fastest times run by UHA in the 1600-meter run came this season.

The same group finished second in the 800-meter relay, setting a new school record at 1:32, knocking over two seconds off their previous best. The foursome has run the seven fastest times in school history in the relay.

Cole Glover also made a pair of trips to the medal podium Thursday. He finished second in the 1600-meter run and third in the 3200.

His time of 4:26.39 equaled the school record time he ran at the Hopkinsville Invitational in April. He now holds the three fastest times for a Blazer runner in the event – all under 4:30.

His 3200-meter time was 10:00.19 – the second fastest in school history.

In the 400-meters, Cam Brown finished in third place at 50.30 and Trey Wallace was seventh at 51.37. Both medaled and Brown’s time was the third-fastest in school history.

In the 200 meters, Clayton Lester ran a 22.96 to finish in eighth place and edge teammate Griffin McCoy out of a medal by .02 seconds.

McCoy did get his individual medal in the triple jump. He finished in third place at 42 feet, 10.5 inches, and broke his own school record in the process.

Lemar Northington II just missed the podium with a ninth-place finish in the high jump with a height of six feet, two inches off his school record.

As a team, UHA scored 47 points to finish in fifth place – one point out of fourth place. Walton-Verona captured the state title with 64 points.

UHA had three entries in the girls’ meet.

Emma Dill finished in 18th place in the 300-meter hurdles (52.73) and ran 18.78 in the 100-meter hurdles to finish in 23rd place.

Aliviah Acree finished in 20th place in the 200 meters in 28.48 seconds.
