It was a big day for Caldwell County eighth grader Kyndle Mahaffey at the Clark’s Pump-n-Shop Class 1A State Track and Field Meet Friday in Lexington.

Mahaffey won the adapted 100-meter dash in her wheelchair, covering the distance on the UK track in 35.06 seconds. She just missed the Class 2A state record of 34.98 seconds set by Wayne County’s Taylor West in 2013.

Mahaffey, who was born with Myelomeningocele Spina Bifida, was able to compete in the adapted 100-meter wheelchair competition throughout the season thanks to a donation from the Princeton Elks Lodge #1115 and the Princeton Kiwanis Club.

Elsewhere, Ava Pickett finished in 16th place finish in the high jump at 4 feet, 8 inches.

Avery Wells finished 17th in the long jump at 14 feet, 8 inches, and was 18th in the 200-meter run in 27.48 seconds. Her time was the sixth fastest in school history.

The 800-meter relay team of Haley Dalton, Shaely Thibodeaux, Ava Pickett, and Avery Wells came in 13th place in a time of 1:51.04. The time was the third fastest in school history and just 1.64 seconds off the school record.

Wells, Thibodeaux, Chevy McGowen, and Mariah Merritt came in 23rd place in the 400-meter relay in 53.4 seconds.

For the guys, Cooper Mobley came in 18th place in the shot put at 41 feet, 6.5 inches. He was also 20th in the discus throw at 112 feet, 9 inches. Just a freshman, Mobley already owns the school record in the shot put and has the second-best discus throw.

Timothy Nichols was 22nd in the triple jump at 38 feet, 3.5 inches.
