Jamison Glass was his usual dominant self on Saturday at the Cayce Mill Classic, racking up 43 points on the way to a double-double against hosts Hopkins County Central. But the hot-shooting Storm had the answer, drilling 12 three-pointers to hold off the Rebels for a 94-92 shootout victory.
Coming off their first loss of the season at Calloway, the Storm erupted for 32 first-quarter points, including 11 each for Davonyae Butcher and Travahn Jones. After being honored before the game for reaching 1,000 career points, Hopkins Central’s Drake Skeen added to his total with seven in the first frame.
However, the Rebels stayed within striking distance with 11 first-quarter points from Glass, and Keyshawn Moore and Hayden Strader combined for ten to keep the deficit manageable at eight points.
Todd Central outscored the Storm 14-7 over the first half of the second quarter and pulled to within a point at 39-38 after a short jumper by Strader. But Hopkins Central closed the half on a 17-4 run behind eight more points for Skeen, and the Storm led 56-42 after Butcher drilled a three just ahead of the buzzer to cap a 17-point first half.
Five-straight points by Jones to start the third quarter put the Storm on the verge of a 20-point cushion, but a three-pointer by Devin Schutt and back-to-back triples by Strader got it back to single digits. Glass scored the final nine points of the quarter for the Rebels, including a bucket down low inside the final minute to trim the margin to five to start the fourth.
Glass had a pair of ferocious dunks in traffic, and his putback with 6:21 to go left the Storm clinging to a 74-73 lead. Brett Harris connected on a corner three for the Rebels to tie the game with five minutes to play, but Butcher was fouled behind the arc and hit all three free throws and nailed a triple on the next trip to put the Storm in front for good.
