The Kentucky women’s basketball reconstruction has started for new coach Kenny Brooks.
He landed his first recruit since taking over as UK’s new coach when 6-3 sophomore Amelia Hassett flipped her commitment from Virginia Tech — Brooks’ previous team — to Kentucky.
She averaged 19.0 points and 12.7 rebounds per game at Eastern Florida State last season and not only shot 54.5 percent overall from the field but was a 41 percent 3-point shooter. She had 22 double-doubles and was named the Citrus Conference Player of the Year and Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) Player of the Year in leading the Titans to a 27-5 record.
Hassett is from Albury, New South Wales, Australia. She averaged nine points and eight rebounds per game during the 2022-23 season when she helped Eastern Florida State reach the junior college Final Four. She has also played in the NLB1, an Australian semi-pro league run by the National Basketball League. She also played with Australia’s youth national teams.
Here is the message Hassett posted on Instagram Thursday:
“Very excited to announce my commitment to University of Kentucky to continue my athletic and academic career! I would like to thank my coaches, friends and family and everyone who helped me throughout this process and gave me the support and guidance. Go wildcats.”
Virginia Tech All-American point guard Georgia Amoore (18.8 points, 6.8 assists, 2.6 rebounds), freshman center Clara Strack (4.5 points, 4.1 rebounds) and freshman guard Samyha Suffren are all also in the transfer portal.
Other recruits signed with the Hokies are four-star wing Lexi Blue (6-2), Baltimore three-star forward Myah Hazelton (6-4), and Portuguese center Clara Silva (6-7).
Brooks has offered a scholarship to Clarksville (Tenn.) five-star guard Imari Berry, a McDonald’s All-American and former Clemson signee. She has narrowed her list to Kentucky, Louisville, and North Carolina. Four-star guard Adelaide Jernigan of North Carolina has also has a UK offer from Brooks.
