He’s never seen him play in person but Frederick Douglass coach Nathan McPeek knows that transfer Cedric Works could be a special player.

The 6-5, 230-pound edge rusher moved from Ohio to Lexington and has enrolled at Frederick Douglass. Works is one of the highest rated players in Kentucky’s 2025 recruiting class. He is a top 150 player in some recruiting rankings.

He had 82 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 6.5 quarterback sacks and two interceptions for Northmont High School in Dayton last season.

“I have only read internet stuff about him. I have watched online highlights,” said McPeek Monday night. “I only spent a little bit of time with him today but he seems like a great kid.”

Even though Works is enrolled at Douglass, he has to go through Kentucky High School Athletic Association protocol to be cleared to start full-scale practice and also submit the necessary paperwork to be declared eligible by the KHSAA.

“He just moved into the district. I have no idea why he moved. Anybody that moves into the district gets an opportunity to play football and now it just depends on when he is ruled eligible to play,” McPeek said. “He will go through the same eligibility process that anyone who moves into the district does to be cleared by the KHSAA but I don’t think there’s any doubt he will meet the requirements.”

The Broncos open the season Aug. 24 at Western Kentucky University against Bowling Green and will also play Trinity, Manual, Corbin, Male and Boyle County during the regular season.

“We are playing six or seven teams that could win state championships,” McPeek said. “The last two years it has been hard to find a schedule but at least we have 10 in-state games this year which is good for the RPI. I think our four home games with Trinity, Corbin, Male and Bryan Station will be very well attended.”

Works obviously will give the Broncos another playmaker to help navigate that difficult schedule.

“He obviously has a lot of potential to be rated the way he is. We will adapt to what he can do,” McPeek said. “We have really good players and he will fit in nicely with the players we have.”

Frederick Douglass currently has three players — Dane Key, Jager Burton and Ty Bryant — playing at Kentucky.

  1. I’m interested in seeing his production here in Kentucky compared to Ohio. I’ve seen high school football in Ohio and it’s a little more of a big deal their then it is here. Texas Florida Georgia Ohio and probably Michigan has the best high school football you could probably switch Michigan with Louisiana. Texas Florida and Ohio put out the most talent.
