The Christian County Lady Colonels took a big step forward toward the top seed in the 8th District volleyball tournament Monday night. The Lady Colonels got big nights from Skylar Kirby and Kaidence Atwell at the net as they picked up a big four-set win over the Heritage Christian Academy Lady Warriors.
The opening set played back and forth with the lead changing hands ten times. Trailing 21-20 late in the set, Christian County finished the set on a 5-1 run to win the set 25-22 to go up 1-0 in the match.
The second set was all HCA, The Lady Warriors took an early 6-1 lead in the set and kept rolling. HCA would win the set 25-17 to even the set up at 1-1. Mya Goodwin and Grace Conley had big plays for the Lady Warriors.
Christian County scored the opening point of the third set and never trailed, taking a 25-21 win to go up two sets to one. Heritage Christian had chances to get to the lead but just could never get in front. The set was tied three different times. Skylar Kirby and Abby Gibbs had a big set for the Lady Colonels.
The Lady Colonels opened fast in the fourth set, taking a 6-1 lead. The quick start rocked the Lady Warriors and they never recovered as Christian County won 25-15 and closed out the match three sets to one.
Skylar Kirby had a big night for Christian County, finishing with 11 kills. She added 3 service aces to her work for the night. Kaidence Atwell was also a factor on the attack for the Lady Colonels, coming up with eight kills of her own.
Ashlea Russell played a big role in setting the table for the rest of her teammates. She finished the match with 26 assists. Russell also had 3 service aces.
Mya Goodwin was a force for Heritage Christian, ending up with 17 kills, 12 assists, and one service ace. Makenzie McCarty ended up with 4 kills and 12 assists for the Lady Warriors.
Christian County improves to 2-4 overall with the win and 2-0 in district play. The Lady Colonels host Whitesvlile Trinity on Tuesday.
HCA, who again played without their top setter Hadlee Hayes, who is out with a leg injury, goes to 5-3 with the loss. The Lady Warriors host Madisonville-North Hopkins Tuesday evening.
