Corey Peters and Lane Kiffin Agree About UK’s Defense

Former Kentucky all-SEC defensive lineman Corey Peters played 13 years in the NFL before embarking on a new career as a talent scout for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“My schools are in the northeast. When it comes to UK, I am  just a fan and watching the games like everyone else,” he said when he was back in Lexington for his induction into the UK Athletics Hall of Fame. “I have not put in any time studying film of UK.”

However, just watching the Cats play makes a couple of things obvious to him.

“I think the D-line is really strong. The defense is really good,” Peters said. “I like (cornerback Maxwell) Hairston. (Defensive tackle) Deonw (Walker) is obviously a special talent,” Peters said. “UK has no shortage of talent. They just have to build that consistency and always play their best.”

Kentucky will need to be at its best at No. 5 Ole Miss today because the Rebels have one of the nation’s most potent offenses. However, Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin is a believer in the UK defense — or at least that is what he says.

“I think Kentucky is absolutely loaded on defense and has NFL players. Number zero [Deone Walker] has been unblockable a lot of times this year, and they’ve always had great scheme and great coaching over there,” Kiffin said. “Basically, all these guys returned, and then they have Georgia linebacker [Jamon Dumas-Johnson] as a great leader and player.”

Kiffin noted how Kentucky held Georgia under 300 yards and only 13 points two weeks ago.

“I know people want to point to the South Carolina game being lopsided but look at the Georgia game and how they played,” Kiffin said. “They very easily could have beat Georgia, and have held everybody, I think, under 300 yards all year long.”

  1. We have a great defense and a poor offense. If we even had a average offense we would be nearly unstoppable. The defense is going to do its job. Its up to the offense to see how far this team goes. I’m predicting we get better every game. If we end up 8-4 or better it was a good season 7-5 or 6-6 at least we still have one of the longest bowl streaks. I think you can’t expect about 6 or 7 wins every year. I think Stoops might take over the Iowa program. We can get an elite coach here for 9 million a year. Do fingers crossed.

  2. KY’s O line is non existent.. Very poor blocking. We really miss Harriston in the Secondary. Not going to end well for the Cats today unless something changes.

  3. Going into the 4th quarter it is apparent that this a very poorly coached offense especially the O line. Also, I know that it is not in the UK DNA to make adjustments at the half, but come on man.
