Unlike the Bible version of the matchup between David and Goliath, sometimes in the sports world Goliath just is simply too big and too strong. Such was the case Monday night as the Madisonville-North Hopkins Maroons and the Lyon County Lyons took to the pitch at the Stadium of Champions in the quarterfinal round of the boys 2nd Region soccer tournament.
The Lyons had struggled with injuries and struggled to find a way to put the ball into the net this season. On the other side, the Maroons had played one of the most difficult schedules in the state and had still managed to pick up 15 wins on the season. Turns out, this time was Goliath’s turn to pick up a win.
The Maroons scored five goals in the first eight minutes, four of them by Eli Redpath as Madisonville-North Hopkins heads back to the regional semifinals with a 15-0 win over Lyon County. The match ended at the half due to the 8-goal rule.
Several different Maroons scored in the match. Eli Redpath led the effort with four goals and three assists. Logan Terry, Asher Reed, and Reuben Lutz added two goals each. Terry also had two assists.
Corbin Caskey, Hunter Gamblin, Trey Starks, Shawn Marsh, and Dominic Blanford had one goal each.
The win was the 9th in a row for the Maroons, who have not lost since a home defeat to Marshall County on September 14. Madisonville improves to 16-6-1.
Lyon County ends the 2024 season at 1-14-0.
Up next for the Maroons is a semifinal match Tuesday evening against Henderson County, who advanced with a 4-0 win over Christian County,
