Hugh Freeze Expects to See Typical UK Defense Against Auburn

The good news for Kentucky is that Auburn quarterback Payton Thorne is completing less than 60 percent of his passes. The bad news is UK ranks 15th nationally in yards per attempt (8.9 yards) and no team has completed more passes of 40-plus yards than Auburn  with 13.
Remember Kentucky gave up seven completions for over 40 yards to Florida freshman quarterback DJ Lagway in last week’s loss when the Gators also scored 48 points.Even though Kentucky’s defense is perceived as one of the best in the SEC, UK ranks second in the conference allowing plays of 10 yards or more with 65 and last in plays of 30 plus yards with 16.

Kentucky hosts Auburn Saturday night and Auburn coach Hugh Freeze believes the Cats giving up over 300 yards in the first half against Florida and so many big pass plays was an “outlier” for the Cats.

“Obviously, give Florida a ton of credit for making the explosive plays they did and playing as well as they did,” Freeze said on the SEC coaches teleconference Wednesday. “Typically no one, if you look at the stats, has put up near those numbers for this year, including some very, very, very good football teams.”

Kentucky lost only 13-12 to Georgia and won 20-17 at Ole Miss.  That’s what has Freeze concerned.

“The job that they’ve done against explosive teams like Ole Miss and Georgia this year is probably the more realistic version of what you get from a Kentucky defense and offensively, man, they’re really well coached, and know who they are, and know how to manage a game from an offensive perspective,” Freeze said.

“And so I think you’ve got to bank on seeing the best version of what we’ve seen and the most common version of what we’ve seen from them has not been — and again, you got to give Florida credit for what they did. I just know that has not been a typical thing for Kentucky’s defense, for sure.”

  1. So far, this season has not been what I expected. We beat a team I didn’t think we could, barely lost to a team that I thought would dominate us, and then lose to 3 teams that totally outplayed us, but at the season’s start looked like they would be wins. Auburn is a must win game if we are to have any hopes of getting a bowl bid. If we lose, the season tanks out. At least we have basketball to look forward to again.

    1. That’s true. The 2 games I thought we would lose we played great. I thought we would beat South Carolina and Vanderbilt. I thought Florida was a 50/50 game and they destroyed us. If we lose to Auburn at home we need to start getting prepared for next year. You would be a fool to think even making a 6-6 bowl is something to play for. I would play Gavin and Cutter and tell Brock to pack his bags. He needs to transfer at seasons end because we are going a different direction next year. He would be a great quarterback at maybe Western Kentucky or North Texas or Arizona. Not in the SEC and definitely not at Kentucky. He had it made at Georgia. A 5* offensive line. 5* receivers and still couldn’t get the starting nod. He went to a team much worse on the line and with playmakers. Its almost a smack in the face like TJ you didn’t see this happening Stupid. Remember Leary came with accolades. I think Leary should have sat out last year and gave his shoulder more time to recover. Leary was better than Brock. I think the offensive line was worse with Leary so of course he didn’t have a good season. He played great at North Carolina State. The same can’t be said for Brock. He hasn’t done anything in his career. He’s in his 4th year of college and he looks terrible. He gets to nervous and looks like he wants to run the ball every time. Even when he gets time he still looks nervous. I just don’t think Brock has what it takes to be a every down quarterback in the SEC. Maybe I’m wrong? Maybe I’m right? I know this much I wouldn’t want to go through this same shit next year. If Brock stays maybe he gets better but also maybe he don’t. Then we are stuck with him for 2 years. As of right now he can’t be that much better than Gavin Wimsatt. Maybe a little better. But when the lights come on some players respond some don’t. Brock needs a Xanax before every game.

  2. In the games we should win department, the Cats have been just plane awful. I predict that we will make Auburn look a lot better than they are.

    1. So sad but true.

A team which only gets up for a few top ranked teams is a team not well coached. The players muster up interest a few games but the coaching staff is not even in the same universe as the players in most games.
