After going more than five years without a win over Madisonville-North Hopkins, the Christian County Lady Colonels picked up their second straight over the Lady Maroons Tuesday night with a 68-44 win on Don Parsons Court.
Christian County also knocked the Lady Maroons out of the 2nd Region tournament back in March with a 56-51 win in the quarterfinal round at Trigg County High School.
The game was not always pretty as both teams had their struggles at times from the field. However, Christian County was strong on the boards, getting second, third, and even on occasion, fourth shot opportunities throughout the night. The Lady Colonel full court pressure also caused the Lady Maroons some problems, especially in the first half of play.
Christian County scored the first seven points of the game, getting strong rebounding efforts from NeVaeh Day, Lazarie Daniel, and Genesis McGee. The lead would get to as many as 11 at 14-3 before the Lady Maroons battled back to within 16-9 at the end of the first. SaNya Carney played a big part in the Lady Maroons getting back to within double figures.
The Lady Colonel lead would stay in double digits throughout much of the second quarter as the Lady Maroons continued battling the pressure defense from Christian County. The lead would still be double figures at 31-20 when the first half came to an end.
Riley Sword did her best to ignite a Madisonville rally in the third quarter. The Lady Maroons would close to within six points early in the quarter at 34-28.
But then the veteran leadership of Anaysia Bagwell and NeVaeh Day took over for Christian County on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court. By the end of the quarter, the lead was back out to 45-34.
With Sword continuing her big second half for the Lady Maroons, Madisonville-North Hopkins cut the lead to 45-38 early in the fourth. Then, the Lady Colonels dropped the hammer.
With Bagwell and Day rolling in the second half, the Lady Colonels went on a 15-2 run to blow the game open and finally put the Lady Maroons away.
Anaysia Bagwell led Christian County with 21 points, 15 of them in the second half. NeVaeh Day added 16 points. Lazarie Daniel finished the game with 7.
Riley Sword was the only Lady Maroon to hit double figures with 18 points. Bailey Bryant added 7 points while SaNya Carney and Macy Wright had 6 points each.
Christian County (2-1) is back on the road Thursday night for a big region battle at Henderson County.
Madisonville-North Hopkins (2-2) will host the Hopkins County Central Lady Storm Thursday night.
