Todd County Central and Hopkinsville are a pair of mirror-image teams – athletic with solid guard play and strong in the post.
Monday’s game at Hopkinsville’s Tiger Gym saw the Lady Tigers play a solid first half with Todd Central providing the second-half reflection and grabbing a 68-56 road win.
Hopkinsville was able to turn the Lady Rebels over in the first half, building a 15-11 lead after one quarter and building a 27-19 lead behind six first-quarter points from Dominque Allensworth and nine first-half points from Lashanti Wilson.
Todd Central had 11 turnovers in the first half but cut the deficit at halftime to 27-23.
“Hoptown did a great job of changing defenses, and getting after it, and keeping us kind of crazy-minded,” Todd Central coach Nick Suttle said. “We tried to get them settled down a little bit at halftime and organize what we do. I felt like they did an amazing job of focusing, and accomplishing that goal.”
Freshman Jordyn Shemwell sparked a third-quarter comeback as she took over the contest, scoring 15 of her 23 points in the frame.
Hopkinsville, who turned the ball over just four times in the first half, had 16 turnovers after halftime as Todd County Central extended its defense on the floor and created mistakes.
Shemwell hit consecutive 3-pointers to break a 31-31 tie and give the Lady Rebels a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
JaMya Kay scored 11 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter as the Lady Rebels built a 58-45 lead. Kay added eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Alexis Taylor added 18 points and 14 rebounds for the Lady Rebels, who have won two straight over Hoptown after dropping 12 of 13 in the series.
