Coming off their first loss to Dawson Springs in 28 years Tuesday night, the Madisonville-North Hopkins Maroons were looking for a little positive mojo. You could say they got that Friday night on their home court.
The Maroons built a big first half lead and then held on coming down the stretch to take a 45-42 win over Henderson County. The loss was Henderson County’s first to a 2nd Region opponent since last year’s 2nd Region tournament.
Five different Maroons scored in the first quarter and the Maroon defense held the Colonels to just a pair of field goals and a single free throw as Madisonville took a 14-5 lead after one.
Trashaun Smith gave Madisonville a big second quarter, scoring six points as the Maroons were able to extend the lead. The two teams headed off to the break with Madisonville-North Hopkins leading 28-16.
The Henderson defense came out and tightened down on the Maroons in the third quarter. The Colonels were able to hold Madisonville to just seven points in the quarter. The problem for the Colonels was that they did not take full advantage of that opportunity, only cutting the lead to 35-26 heading into the final quarter.
Henderson kept coming at the Maroons in the final quarter and the defense held Madisonville to just one field goal over the final 8 minutes. However, the Maroons, in the form of Landen Smith and Ryan Bryant, were able to knock down 8 of 12 at the line. Henderson made it a bit interesting in the final minute but the Maroons held on for the three-point win.
Trashaun Smith led the Maroons with 14 points. Landen Smith and Ryan Bryant added 10 point each.
For Henderson County, Elijah Suggs was the only player to reach double figures with 15. Cooper Davenport and Lacon McKinney scored 9 points each. Davenport scored all of his in the second half.
The Maroons improve to 12-8 and will go on the road to Warren Central Monday night.
