Lyon County’s girls no doubt remembered the last time they took the floor against Hopkins County Central.
The Lady Lyons were favored by most observers that night, but fell to the Lady Storm 61-59 in the first round of the 2nd Region tournament a year ago at Trigg County.
In the rematch Thursday night in Eddyville, Lyon got off to a blistering start, then held off Hopkins Central late for a 57-49 victory.
The Lady Lyons, now 19-8, hit five 3-pointers in the first quarter while running out to a 23-10 lead after just 8 minutes.
Piper Cotham had 13 points and Trinity Taylor had eight in the opening stanza. They would go on to share team-high honors with 19 points apiece.
The Lady Storm crept within 30-21 at the break, but Lyon went back to work in the third period.
Taylor had seven points in that frame while Lilly Perry and Audrey Akridge each buried 3-pointers.
That helped the Lady Lyons go up by as much as 20 points before taking a 49-32 lead to the final frame.
Hopkins Central (14-13) made one final run at the Lady Lyons and got as close as 54-47 on Calajia Mason’s 3-pointer with 1:43 to play.
However, Perry countered with two free throws, and Lyon held on for the eight-point decision.
Jenna Coursey added 11 points for the Lady Lyons, who will go for their 20th win Saturday afternoon when they host Mayfield.
Hopkins Central, which ran all the way to the regional championship game last season after beating Lyon in the first round, got 20 points from Calajia Mason and 18 from Addie Menser. But the rest of the squad combined for just 11 points.
The Lady Storm will also play again Saturday afternoon when they face Hancock County in the Independence Bank Classic at the Owensboro Sportscenter.
