Thomas Sapp’s strong shooting over the past month paid off Saturday as the Todd County Central senior qualified for the KHSAA State Archery Tournament.

Sapp shot a 289 to finish in sixth place at Saturday’s Region 1 Tournament at Trigg County and claim the second of three individual qualifying spots for next month’s state tourney.

Last week, Sapp shot a 287 to finish 40th out of 1,470 archers at the NASP State Tournament in Louisville. His career-best score of 291 came on March 1 at the Todd County Rebel Shootout.

Alex Futrell shot a 283 to finish in 14th place, just missing a trip to state by three points. Will Tabor also shot a 283 to finish in 16th place, and Paxton Frogue shot a 278 to come in 29th place.

Joe Anthony Tabor (276) finished in 44th place followed by Eli Craig (275) in 46th place; Traylen Scarbrough (264) in 93rd place; Josiah Tucker (264) in 94th place; Jacob Slaughter (262) in 98th place; Dalton Goff (262) in 99th place; Wesley Jones (232) in 138th place; and Jack Henry Skipworth (206).

As a team, Todd County Central scored 1,948 points to finish in fifth place. They were six points out of third place. Marshall County won the region title with 1,993 points.

Unlike NASP tournaments, where the top 12 scores of both boys and girls count toward a team score, the KHSAA takes the top seven scores of each gender to determine the boys’ and girls’ team and individual champions.

The KHSAA State Archery Tournament will be on April 17 in Lexington.
