Marland Lowe said former Kentucky guard Aaron Harrison gave UK a strong endorsement when his son, point guard Jaland Lowe, was considering a transfer from Pittsburgh to play for coach Mark Pope.
Marland Lowe has worked with and trained basketball players in the Houston area for over 30 years. Players he has helped include not only Aaron Harrison but also former UK players Andrew Harrison, Ron Mercer and De’Aaron Fox. He even mentored stars Penny Hardaway, Damon Stoudamire, andT.J. Ford.
During a Zoom call promoting the upcoming TBT where the Harrison twins will again play for LaFamilia, UK’s alumni team, Aaron Harrison was asked about that conversation with Marland Lowe.
“I’ve been knowing Jaland since he was literally a baby from a distance, kind of, since he’s a lot younger than me. He comes from a great basketball family. His dad is really into basketball,” Aaron Harrison said. “I’m happy that he gets to even experience that because a lot of people — everybody that plays basketball, they would want to experience playing at Kentucky and getting that type of support. I’m happy for him and proud of him. I’ll give him any advice that he ever needs.”
Andrew Harrison is also glad to see the 6-foot-3 Pitt guard transferring to Kentucky for his junior year.
“I know his dad. His dad and my dad are kind of around the same age — maybe his dad is a little younger. I’ve been knowing him forever, just from our AAU program and stuff,” Andrew Harrison said.
“I didn’t know too much about his son until he went to Pitt. I know he can definitely play. He’s definitely what the program needs. I know he’s a tough kid, a smart kid, been around the game his whole life. I know BBN is excited to get him and see what he can do.”
Lowe averaged 6.8 points, 5.5 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game last season. Pope l likes his explosiveness and anticipates him being a much better 3-point shooter at UK than he was during his two seasons at Pitt.
