A last-inning rally fell just a little short as the Caldwell County Lady Tiger softball team dropped its regular-season finale to Marshall County 7-5 on Thursday.
Down 7-1 going to the bottom of the seventh at Lady Tiger Field, Caldwell’s girls scored four times and got the potential tying run to the plate before falling to the Lady Marshals.
Marshall (24-6-1) never trailed while methodically building its lead with singles runs in the first and second innings, two runs in each of the third and fourth frames and another run in the sixth.
Caldwell (14-14) was limited to just three base hits through six innings before finally breaking through against Marshall pitcher Allicen Harris in the seventh.
Adley Lewis singled home two runs to make it 7-3, then Alexis Wood doubled into the left-field corner to drive in two more to make it a 7-5 game.
That got the potential tying run to the plate, but Harris struck out the next batter to end the game — the eighth strikeout of the game for the Lady Marshal senior, who allowed no earned runs on seven base hits in the contest.
Harris also went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Kadence Cavitt was 2-for-4 and knocked in a run.
Brylee Butts was 2-for-4 for Caldwell. Her base hit in the seventh inning was the 200th of her career — a Lady Tiger record.
Adley Lewis was 1-for-3 and knocked in three.
Wood suffered the loss in the circle for Caldwell. She allowed four earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts in seven innings.
Marshall has now won six of the last seven matchups with the Lady Tigers. Marshall now leads all-time 15-12.
Caldwell’s girls will next host the 7th District tournament next week.
In semifinal action on Monday, Madisonville-North Hopkins plays Dawson Springs at 5:30 followed by Caldwell and Hopkins County Central at 7:00.
The championship game is set for Tuesday at 7:00.
