Both Lyon County basketball teams opened their season at home against the Murray High Tigers on Tuesday evening. And after the girls’ team won in commanding fashion, the boys did the same, with an 84-64 victory.
Lyon got off to a very hot start, forcing some Murray turnovers and converting on them. The Lyons took an 11-0 lead into a timeout, but the Tigers were able to start scoring and cut the lead to six. Neither team was able to grab the momentum after that, but a few buckets by Lyon at the end of the quarter gave them a 26-16 lead.
The first half of the second quarter saw Murray clawing back, down just 28-24. Lyon was able to extend their lead again, but the Tigers made a pair of threes and a fast break layup to tie the game at 37 points apiece at the half.
The third quarter saw a bit of a slow offensive start for both teams, as there were just seven combined points through just under four minutes. Murray then took their first lead of the game, 46-41, and forced a timeout. Fortunately for Lyon, the timeout worked out, and they were able to go on an 8-0 run.
Things started to get a bit heated with some shoves exchanged in between plays, as well as the game itself becoming more physical. Bray Kirk was then able to make a three at the buzzer to give the Lyons a 54-50 lead heading into the fourth.
He also started off the scoring in the final period with a pair of layups, then a three from Cooper Collins forced a Murray timeout. After that, it only got worse for the Tigers, as Lyon was able to keep scoring like clockwork and ended the game with an 84-64 win.
Four Lyons scored in double figures, with Kirk leading all scorers with an impressive 29 points. Isaac Defew also contributed 18 points, which was more than anyone on Murray as well.
Lyon County will be back in action against Sterlington on Thursday, December 4. The game will be played at Marshall County Hoopfest, and is slated to tip off at 9 p.m.
