Winter weather in Central Kentucky has led officials with the Kentucky High School Athletic Association to postpone a state championship weekend.
In a news release early Friday morning, the KHSAA announced that “Due to the onset of the latest round of inclement weather overnight Thursday into Friday morning, and additional snow and ice expected on Saturday, along with bitterly cold temperatures that will minimize snowmelt, the 2025-26 KHSAA State Competitive Cheer & Dance Championships have been postponed.”
More than 100 cheer squads and nearly 70 dance squads had been expected to be headed to Winchester for the event.
The KHSAA added “the safety of participants, coaches, administrators, and parents remains the primary concern around this decision. A compelling factor in this decision is the more than significant number of squads that travel in school buses and vans from districts that have made the difficult decision to cancel classes on Friday to mitigate risk.”
The state cheer and chance competition has now been tentatively rescheduled for January 9-11 at George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester.
KHSAA officials went on to add “These decisions are never easy, but due not only to the weather near the event site, but also to travel issues for those teams travelling from areas with even more snow and worsening road conditions, the safety of everyone involved must remain the top priority.”
