Hoptown Finishes in 5th Place at Area 1 Championships

The Hopkinsville Lady Tigers brought home a top-five finish from the Area 1 Championships on Saturday at Calloway County High School.

Hopkinsville had success in the hurdles, with Leaunna Wilkerson finishing second in the 100-meter hurdles (17.26). Teammate Ollia Dixon placed 12th (19.93).

In the 300-meter hurdles, Dixon finished 11th (56.10), while Wilkerson was 12th (56.71).

In the 200 meters, Grace Cansler posted a season-best 28.42 to place 10th, while Alanni Quarles was close behind in 15th (28.60).

Aireona Spikes took 20th in the 100 meters in 14.21 seconds, and Laelah Watkins came in 27th in 14.60 seconds.

In the 400 meters, Alanni Quarles finished third (1:03.58, PB) and Grace Cansler took fifth (1:04.08, SB). Laelah Watkins added a 16th-place finish (1:10.73).

In the middle-distance events, Alexis Herrera Lovato placed 4th in the 800 meters (2:32.70), while Kaydon Coats recorded a personal-best 2:48.17 to finish 10th.

In the distance race, Lauren Mayes finished 3rd in the 3200 meters (12:42.60, SB).

In the field events, Heaven McCollough cleared 4-04.00 to place 6th in the high jump.

In the discus, Amani Jones finished 17th (70-00), and Chandni Jones was 23rd (57-09).

In the shot put, TaLaijha Cherry led the group with an 11th-place finish (27-06.50), followed by Chandni Jones (12th, 27-05.50) and Amani Jones (18th, 24-11.50).

In the long jump, Leaunna Wilkerson placed 20th (13-02.50), and Amani Pizana was 22nd (12-00.00).

The 400-meter relay team of Jayla Brunson, Ollia Dixon, Leaunna Wilkerson, and Alanni Quarles placed 7th (53.25).

The 800-meter relay team of Grace Cansler, Alanni Quarles, Laelah Watkins, and Leaunna Wilkerson finished 4th with a season-best time of 1:52.42.

In the 1600-meter relay, the team of Grace Cansler, Alanni Quarles, Alexis Herrera Lovato, and Leaunna Wilkerson placed 6th (4:38.33).

Hopkinsville totaled 40.5 points to finish in fifth place and second among Class 2A schools behind Calloway County.

Hopkinsville will return to Calloway County on May 12 for the Class 2A Region 1 Meet.
