Top doubles seeds had a tough go of it on the opening day of the Girls Region 2 Tennis Tournament at Hopkinsville’s Ruff Park on Wednesday.
Already delayed a day due to weather, Wednesday’s start began an hour late due to light rain, with no matches advancing past the quarterfinal round.
Top seed Addyson Raymer and Cadence Curry of Madisonville-North Hopkins moved into the quarterfinals with a pair of wins.
However, the second-, third-, and fourth-seeds all dropped their opening-round matches.
Caldwell County’s teams had a good day as No. 15 seed Jayden Lamb and Paysen Menser needed a tie-breaker to get a straight set win in their opener. The pair then knocked off two-seed Gabrielle Melvin and Irah Plummer of Henderson County 6-2, 6-4 in the final match of the night.
No. 5 seed Troy Freeman and Meleah Greenfield also advanced to the quarterfinals with straight-set wins, making Caldwell County the only school with two teams in the quarterfinals.
Also crashing the party into the semifinals was No. 20 Grace Stultz and Abigail Allen, who defeated seeds 13 and four to advance.
No. 14 seed Addison Renshaw and Emerson Boyd of Christian County also advanced to the quarterfinals. They will meet the only doubles team to not take the court on Wednesday, Lilly Armour and Avery Adams of Hopkins County Central who advanced due to a walkover in the round of 16.
Teams that reach the semifinal round will qualify for the state first round, to be played on May 20 at South Warren High School, comprising the first four regions.
The team tournament has been postponed to Monday.
