Caldwell County’s bats erupted late for a 14-3 victory in five innings Thursday at Mayfield.
Down 3-2 through three innings, the Tigers scored five times in the fourth and then seven times in the fifth to end the game early on the 10-run mercy rule.
Caldwell (18-10) beat Mayfield 10-0 in five innings last week in Princeton.
Scott Cortner doubled home a run as part of the big fourth inning as the Tigers regained the lead. Brody Kirk and Drew Stevens had RBI singles while Ari Wells knocked in two runs with a single to center.
Kirk doubled in two more runs in the fifth inning. Wells had another two-run single in that frame. Presten Alfred and Stevens each knocked in runs with singles. Another run scored on a passed ball.
Stevens finished the day 3-for-4 while driving in three. Wells was 2-for-4 and knocked in five.
Kirk was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in. Alfred went 2-for-2 and scored four times. Cortner was 2-for-3 with an RBI as the Tigers outhit the Cardinals 15-2.
Derek Wilson and Mitchell Phelps each had singles.
Phelps was the winning pitcher for Caldwell. He pitched into the fourth inning, allowing three earned runs on two hits while fanning two and walking four.
Ethan Ramage held Mayfield hitless over the final two frames.
The Tigers will finish the regular season on Friday when they host Livingston Central for Senior Night.
Caldwell will then host the 7th District tournament starting Saturday at the VFW Ballpark.
