When Dawson Springs senior Cooper Burge was offered a chance to join the track and field program at Union Commonwealth University, he jumped at the chance.

And he will keep on jumping at the NAIA school in Barbourville.

“Cooper joined us this year, transferred home from another school, and immediately made an impact,” noted Dawson track coach Dylan Simpson. “He was our only triple jumper this year.

“We haven’t had a triple jumper in a couple years. He made the best of the facilities that we have when it comes to our jump pit and everything.

“He made it to state in triple jump in the indoor season, which is a big accomplishment. Only the top 24 jumpers in the state in Class A qualify for that. And then even at outdoor, he continued to get (personal records) and improve again with the limited facilities that we have and continued to get better. So we’re really looking forward to see what he can do with better facilities.”

Burge will compete in both the long jump and triple jump at college after improving in those events this spring.

“We’re looking for him to hit some big numbers that he’s wanting to hit — 20 feet and 40 feet — in those respective events,” noted Simpson.

A signing ceremony in front of family and classmates was held Friday at Dawson Springs High School.

“I want to thank (Union) Coach (Payton) Ellison for believing in me, giving me this opportunity, and believing what I can become,” said Burge. “I’m also thankful for all my coaches, teammates, friends and family who have supported me and pushed me to this point.”

Burge added that, before the track opportunity came up, his original plans were always to play college basketball. He averaged 12.9 points and 5.2 rebounds a game this past season for the Panthers.

“Basketball will always be part of who I am. I was fortunate enough to have opportunities there as well, but track gave me the clearest path for my future, both academically and athletically.

“I thought it was the best decision for me, so I decided to fully commit to it, and who knows? Maybe y’all will see me on the basketball court in the future as well.”
