Trigg County wrestling coach Scotty Hampton has stepped down after three seasons, making the announcement recently at the team’s postseason banquet.
He credited his staff for the team’s success during that time, which included several wrestlers qualifying for the state tournament.
“Having never wrestled in my life, I only helped coach the youth while my kids were young. I knew I had to build a coaching staff that would be able to advance the kids to the next level,” he said in a social media post. “We have built a successful program that will compete with the best. The future is looking bright for this program from K-12.”
In three seasons, Trigg County qualified two guys and five girls for the state wrestling tournament, with MaKenna Hendricks winning the school’s first girls’ state title in February.
“After three years of dedication to our wrestling program as head coach, we want to thank Coach Scotty Hampton for the tremendous impact he has made on our student-athletes and our school,” said incoming District Athletic Director Wendy Ahart. “During his time as head coach, our program celebrated middle school state champions in both the boys and girls divisions, along with the program’s first-ever high school girls state champion. Coach Hampton helped build a strong foundation for the future, leaving behind a very successful youth program that will continue to grow and strengthen our high school program for years to come. More importantly, Coach Hampton was not only a great coach but also a mentor to the athletes he worked with every day. He invested in them both on and off the mat, and that impact will not be forgotten.”
Hampton said the program’s numbers are increasing, which coincides with the construction of a new co-curricular building that serves as the program’s practice home.
