Dawson Springs grad Cooper Burge has had a change of heart.
After originally signing with the track and field program at Union Commonwealth University, Burge has now decided to chase his basketball dreams at Brescia University in Owensboro.
“After a lot of thought, prayer, and conversations with those closest to me, I’ve decided to decommit from Union Commonwealth University,” Burge wrote on social media this week.
“I want to thank Coach (Payton) Ellison and everyone at Union for believing in me and giving me an opportunity to continue my athletic and academic career. I’ll always be grateful for the support they showed me throughout the recruiting process.
“With that being said, I’ve decided to follow a different path and pursue my passion for basketball. I’m excited to announce that I will be continuing my academic and athletic journey at Brescia University.
“Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way. I’m excited for what’s ahead and ready to get to work.”
Burge had noted when he signed his track and field pact with Union Commonwealth that his original plans were always to play college basketball. He averaged 12.9 points and 5.2 rebounds a game this past season for the Panthers.
Brescia is an NAIA institution. The Bearcats compete in the River States Conference.
