Brothers Randy and David Mills recently gave me the opportunity to be part of the Sports History Now podcast as part of the sportshistoryfoundation.org website.
Frankfort native Randy Mills is “Voice of Kentucky Sweet 16 Basketball” and well known by high school coaches, officials and players because of his work at the state tourney.
The brothers have been hosting this podcast for about seven months now to “honor and celebrate” Kentucky sports moments. They started the series with Doug Flynn, a World Series champion with the Cincinnati Reds and Gold Glove winner with the New York Mets.
It includes an interview with Bobby Keith that Randy Mills recorded in 1991 with the legendary Clay County coach. He had a 767-125 career record, an 86 percent winning percentage in his 27 years. He went to the Sweet 16 a remarkable 18 times and won 129 straight home games. It is a great listen.
They have also interviewed former UK tight end/Super Bowl champion Jacob Tamme, Madison Central coach Allen Feldhaus and star player Dominique Hawkins, former Bell County/UK star Maci Morris, former Pulaski County coach Dave Fraley and others. They have one podcast on the 1978 Shelby County state basketball title run and the Laurel County girls’ basketball dynasty. They interviewed Hall of Fame sportswriter Mike Fields of the Lexington Herald-Leader and had a tribute to Hall of Fame sportswriter Bob White of the Louisville Courier Journal.
For episode 23 that was just released, they picked me. I am still not sure why, but they gave me a chance to share how I became a journalist and some of my many memories — looking back I have thought of many things I wish I had also said but I am sure everyone would be that way.
You can find the Sports History Now Podcast on Apple Podcast, Spotify and YouTube as well as at https://
If you have trouble finding mine, just go to YouTube and search for Larry Vaught Interviews and it will pop up — along with some others but hopefully it will be at the top of the list with a photo of me with UK gymnasts Delaynee Rodriguez, Sharon Lee and Creslyn Brose.
Let me know what you think and again thanks to the Mills brothers for even thinking I belong on a list with some of Kentucky’s greats that they have interviewed.

It certainly was an honor to be selected for this podcast and to be among the likes of Bob White and Mike Fields. Your podcast brought back a lot of memories – All the way from the importance of the Alabama Football game in 1973, Great trip to the Final 4 in 1978, Remembering special men like your dad, Alvis Johnson & E.G. Plummer, up to current excitement around DHS Football, U.K. FB & U.K. BB. (And much more!) You always recognized that “It’s not a minor sport to those that are competing”! Thanks for sharing- I will listen again.
thank you C.U. very much
