A few extra days off did not appear to have any bad side effects for the Hoptown Hoppers as they began their OVL semifinal series with the Fulton Railroaders Friday night at Hopkinsville High School.
The Hoppers scored six runs in their first two at-bats to take a 6-0 lead and put the pedal down from there, going on to take a 13-2 seven-inning win over Fulton to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.
The Hoppers secured the mercy rule win by tacking on four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Hoppers got a great starting effort from J. King on the mound, as he went six innings, giving up just two runs on four hits, striking out eight and walking two.
Brennen Gibson let the Hoptown attack at the plate, going 3-4 with a home run, a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Evan Jacob ended up 3-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Myles Denton finished out the night 3-3 with three RBIs and a run scored.
The Hoppers ended the night with 15 hits, while allowing Fulton just four.
Game two of the series is set for Saturday night in Fulton.
