Fort Campbell defeated Clarksville Academy 44-0 to earn its first victory of the season, dominating the trenches and stifling the Cougars’ Power T formation.
The Falcons’ defense suffocated Clarksville Academy all night, holding the Cougars to minus-17 rushing yards on 36 attempts. The Cougars entered expecting to grind out tough yards inside, but Fort Campbell’s front seven turned every play into a brick wall—shooting gaps and blowing up the line of scrimmage on nearly every snap.
“I told them this week, the formation that they run, they’re going to heavily run,” Falcons head coach Henry Mitchell said of his defensive front. “We told them that they’re going to have to shoot the gap and penetrate, and they did it.”
Every time it looked like the Cougars might find momentum with a 6- or 8-yard gain, the Falcons’ defense shot the gap and tackled the ball carrier in the backfield. The defense was so stingy that it allowed just four first downs all night.
The Falcons (1-1) offense had similar success, moving the ball at will during the rout with 211 rushing yards on 25 attempts. For the Week 2 matchup, Fort Campbell turned to running back-turned-quarterback Hayden Wise, as starting quarterback Isaiah Messer Cruz sat out with an injury.
Wise capitalized on his under-center duties early, pulling a read-option and galloping 74 yards for a touchdown to open the scoring. Wise finished with 148 rushing yards on 11 carries to lead the team. His lone pass completion of the night also found the end zone, as Levi Kruse took a wide receiver screen and weaved through the Cougars’ defense for a 23-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
“[Wise] ran the offense all week. We made some mistakes and we started slow, and we have to correct that,” Mitchell said. “We tried to get into some stuff and run the football, because that’s our identity this year.”
The Falcons’ offense stalled at times, especially in the first half, due to penalties that erased a pair of scores—including a would-be 73-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage.
Mitchell noted that the team prides itself on discipline and wants to see those costly mistakes cleaned up before facing Fort Knox.
In the second half, the penalties proved far less crippling as the offense matched the high energy the defense provided all evening. Karson McClellan scored two second-half touchdowns (from 26 and 5 yards out), dragging multiple defenders into the end zone on both runs.
Enrique Messer Cruz rumbled his way to a 10-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Then, with a running clock winding down the final minutes, special teams put the exclamation point on the blowout.
After Brody Dunn initially mishandled a punt, the ball sat unattended on the turf with no one moving. Dunn quickly scooped it up, broke to the outside, and bolted 46 yards for the game’s final score.
Fort Campbell will look to secure its second win of the season next week at home against rival Fort Knox. Despite the rivalry narrative, Mitchell remains focused inward: “We just have to take care of Fort Campbell—can’t worry about anyone else.”
