Lyon County came into Hopkins County Central’s gym and dominated on the volleyball court as the Lady Lyons came away with a sweep in straight sets over the Lady Storm (25-14, 25-14, 25-14). Tuesday’s win for Lyon snaps a 2-game losing skid and puts the Lady Lyons at 6-17 on the season.
“We were being very aggressive on the ball,” Lyon head coach Cara Hunt said. “We were attacking and setting balls that were difficult for them to pick up.”
With the season well into the second half, Hunt is hoping that aggressiveness will continue on as the regular season winds down.
“(Tuesday’s win) is a good highlight for us,” said Hunt. “We have a tough game coming up Thursday against Crittenden County and it shows that we can do this and come out on top.”
Central was on Lyon’s heels in the second set with the Lady Storm keeping pace being down 11-10. But Lyon ended up going on a 14-4 run to end the set.
“We just needed to make sure to take care of our first contact and push for points,” Hunt said.
Meanwhile over in Central’s camp, Lady Storm head coach Evelyn Morales is still looking for the right combination of players to right the ship. Recently she called up Summer Noel from the junior varsity squad as a fresh addition to the rotation on a varsity team that’s been dealing with injuries.
“After seeing Summer play in JV I felt that she deserved a chance in varsity,” Morales said. “She’s been hustling going after every ball. I called a timeout and told the girls that Summer has been working hard and if the ball is in the air and she’s there let her take it.”
Morales has also been impressed by the serving from Isabella Gunn recently.
“Izzy is a solid server,” Morales said. “I think with her sometimes it just comes down to having the ball in the right position for her. Sometimes her serves go way over the net and out of bounds or into the net. It’s really just getting those fine touches consistently in practice.”
Central will be facing the 7th District for the second go around in the regular season in their next couple of matches as the Lady Storm will travel across the county to take on Madisonville North Hopkins on Thursday.
