Trigg Boys Denied by Trojans

For the second time in less than ten days the Webster County Trojans (6-2-1) prevailed over the Trigg County Wildcats (3-5), this time in the opening match for both teams in the Muhlenberg County Classic. The Wildcats put in a terrible performance the first time around, losing 5-0 at the Recreation Complex.  Trigg, ranked 5th in the YourSportsEdge.com 2nd Region rankings, put in a much better effort Friday night, but the Trojans, ranked 4th, still came out on top, winning 2-1 on a very late goal.

In the ninth minute, the Wildcats had an opportunity for an early lead after freshman Will Jolly was fouled in the box, earning a penalty kick.  However, the opportunity would be missed as the kick was sent over the crossbar.   Webster would soon jump ahead with a goal from sophomore Jorge Martinez off an assist from sophomore Dawson McVay.

The second half was a tight, back and forth affair that appeared to be headed for a draw, but in the last 30 seconds of the match the Trojans’ Martinez would get on the end of a ricochet in the box and keep his nerve, scoring to snatch the win for Webster County.

Both teams return to action at the Muhlenberg County Classic on Saturday, with Trigg playing the 1-5 Muhlenberg County Mustangs at 10:00 AM.  At 4:00 PM, the Wildcats will wrap up their tournament slate when they face the 6-4 Bullitt East Chargers.
