University Heights freshman Tomas Duncan used a strong second half surge to finish 15th at the Class 1A State Cross Country Meet at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. He covered the 3.1-mile course in a time of 17:22, but found himself in 65th place after running a 5:36 first mile. He kept that pace in the second mile and continued to move through the field. His time of 6:05 over the third mile was the sixth fastest third mile time and allowed Duncan to capture a 15th place finish.
He said his first state cross country was an education that he plans to build on in future state meets.
