A candidate with coaching and umpiring experience has been tapped as the new Lyon County baseball coach. The school announced the hiring of Ricky Baker Tuesday evening. Baker most recently served as Trigg County Middle School coach.

Baker is a West Virginia native who played and coached baseball in high school. He has been an assistant football coach in Trigg County and currently serves as head coach of the Midcat football team. He said he intends to continue to coach the middle school program and then begin coaching the Lyon baseball team the day after the season ends.

In addition to coaching travel baseball, Baker has been a certified KHSAA umpire the past two years.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to coach at Lyon County, and I’m grateful they trust me with the head coaching position,” Baker told YourSportsEdge.com Tuesday night.  He said he interviewed for the job this week and accepted the job offer Tuesday afternoon.

Baker takes over for Jeff Embrey, who took over the program just before the start of the 2018 season when Greg Vincent abruptly resigned. The Lyons were 12-14 this season and lost to Trigg County 4-0 in an eight-inning epic district tournament opener decided by a walk-off grand slam.

As middle school coach at Trigg, Baker has seen the talent Lyon County has at the lower levels first-hand, including the middle school team that competed in the middle school state tournament. Several of those players were a part of the Lyon County Junior Babe Ruth team that won the state tournament over the weekend.

Baker said one of his first priorities will be to work with the school to get a coaching staff in place.
