Christian County quarterback J’Lin Powell accounted for 6 touchdowns and the Colonel defense once again stood tall in a 47-10 blowout over Marshall County on Friday night in Benton. The Colonels move above .500 for the first time this season at 3-2, while the Marshals see their record evened at 3-3.
Powell got the Colonels started with a 2-yard touchdown run just under 5 minutes into the game and doubled the lead 6 minutes later with a 28-yard strike to L’Ray Coleman for a 15-0 lead after the first quarter. Jonathan Stokes hit Austin Riley for a 52-yard gain, setting up a field goal for the Marshals to cut the lead to 12.
Dorian Lones returned the ensuing kickoff 38 yards into Marshal territory, and Powell hit Nate McGregor for a 17-yard scoring strike to stretch the lead to 21-3 with just under 6 minutes to play in the first half. A 21-yard run by JaDonavin McNeal and a 13-yard completion to McGregor moved the Colonels inside the Marshal’s 10-yard line with less than a minute on the clock. Fred Tandy caught an 8 yard screen pass and found the end zone for his first catch and touchdown of the season and a 27-3 advantage. Stokes found Isaac Stevenson for 28 yards into the Colonels side of the field, but a fumbled snap ended the Marshall drive and gave County the ball near midfield. McGregor collected a screen pass from Powell and took it 48 yards for another touchdown and the Colonels led 34-3 at the break.
A 38-yard run by Tyquez Douglas on the first possession of the second half and a 15-yard pickup by McNeal had the Colonels in scoring position again, and Powell finished it off himself with a short touchdown run. Up 41-3 with a running clock, the Colonels tacked on their final score in the last seconds of the third quarter on a 42-yard run by Isaiah Forrest, his first TD of the season. The Marshals finally got in the end zone after runs by Stokes of 15, 30 and 13 yards, before a 1-yard plunge for the final 47-10 score.
The Colonels will be back in the friendly confines of the Stadium of Champions next week when the 3-2 Owensboro Red Devils make the trip to Hopkinsville.
