Colin Stevens began the wrestling season in the 170-pound weight class. Midway through, he opted to move up in class for a better shot at a state title. After knocking off two of the state’s top four wrestlers to reach the championship of the 182-pound class, Stevens fell to North Oldham’s Sam Jenkins 2-1 Saturday.
Stevens’ finish is the best for a Trigg wrestler since his father and coach Ralph won the 1982 state title. While it’s a bragging moment for the family, Colin wasn’t pleased with the runner-up result and hopes to use it as fuel for a return trip his senior season.
After knocking off state No. 1 Noah Duke of Ryle 2-1 in Friday’s quarterfinal, the No. 3 ranked Stevens beat No. 4 Chase Blanton of Harrison County 3-0 in Saturday’s semifinal round.
Jenkins entered the state tournament ranked No. 8 but knocked off the No. 2 and No. 6 wrestlers to reach the championship match.
Stevens, who finished third in the 160-pound class last year, joins his uncle Homer as the only Trigg County wrestlers with multiple top three finishes at state.
