An 8-1 loss to No. 4-ranked Louisville Holy Cross ended Lyon County’s stay at the state All A Classic softball tournament on Saturday.

Carson Goatley allowed just one unearned run on four base hits for Holy Cross, which is the four-time defending state champion in the All A ranks. Goatley struck out 12 and walked none.

The Lady Cougars (19-1) chased home a run in the first inning, then added three more in the second. Single runs in the fourth and fifth put Holy Cross up 6-0.

The Lady Lyons (16-9) broke up the shutout with a ryun in the top of the sixth. Sydney Melton singled with one out. She moved to second on a passed ball, then scored on Calista Collins’ two-out double to centerfield.

However, Holy Cross answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to make it 8-1.

Collins finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate for the Lady Lyons. Melton and Nelli Walker each had singles.

Kaylee Whitted was 2-for-3 for Holy Cross with two RBIs. Maddie Gailor was 2-for-4 and drove in four while Bella Velez also finished 2-for-4.

The win was the 12th straight for Holy Cross, which is the favorite to win Sunday’s championship bracket at the All A Classic state tournament at Jack C. Fisher Park in Owensboro.
