Sometimes there are stories connected to sports that are far bigger than the games on the court. Sadly, one of those instances happened last night involving Hopkins County Central High School.
The Storm went on the road to Todd County Central to open the 2019-2020 basketball season Monday evening. Hopkins Central went on to lose the game 62-43, but that turned out not to be the story of the night for the crew from Mortons Gap.
It had been a pretty good night for Hopkins Central freshman Marcus Eaves, he scored 10 points in the first quarter, on his way to a 14 point night, and leading the Storm in scoring. According to Hopkins County athletic department officials, when Eaves and his father, assistant coach Chuck Eaves returned from the game last night, they discovered their home was on fire. The family would lose everything as a result of the fire.
Efforts are now underway to provide help to the family. As a part of that, there will be a collection effort Satuday at the 6th District/7th District Challenge, which is being hosted at Hopkins Central High School.
Anyone seeking more information on the collection effort can contact the office at Hopkins Central. Also, keep an eye on this page as we will add information as it becomes available to us.
