An unusual week early this season for the Super 7. No change in the positions as most of the games over the past week went pretty much as you would expect them to go. The Maroons continue to be solidly entrenched at #1, with Webster County stalking them not too far off in the distance. Then you have a pack of teams that on any given night can play with anybody in the area. Should make for some fun holiday tournament action over the next couple of weeks.
– Madisonville (5-0) – The Maroons have faced a tough schedule to open the season, and have responded the way a champion would be expected to respond. Trips to the King of the Bluegrass and the Traditional Bank tournament will give us an indication of where this team stands, not just region wide, but statewide.
– Webster County (6-0) – If there is a surprise team early in the season in the 2nd Region it would be the Trojans. Most thought they had potential, but not sure that many thought they could be this good this early in the season. Only one of their wins has come by less than double digits.
– Christian County (3-4) – The Colonels schedule has been brutal so far. But Tuesday night’s near upset of Owensboro on the Red Devils’ home court is a good indication of how toughened and tested this team will be by tournament time at the end of February. This could be a team that nobody wants to play when it is one and done.
– Lyon County (6-2) – The Lyons have cruised during their first run through 5th District play. The question at this point is what can they do against the upper echelon in the 2nd Region, both overall and All A. A team looking for a signature win at this point in the season.
– Henderson County (3-3) – The northern Colonels took it in the grill in a loss to Warren Central. That nearly happened again, until they almost pulled off a miracle rally against Paducah Tilghman. Mark down January 17th when they take on Union County for the first time of the season.
– Hopkinsville (3-3) – The Tigers are a team that is hard to get a grasp on at this point. A team that can play with just about anyone in the region on one night, and a team that could lose to just about anyone on another night. Let’s see how the holiday tourney time plays out for this team.
– Union County (4-2) – The Braves seem to be walking a fine line right now. A last second win over Hopkins Central, an overtime win at home against UHA, and a tight road loss at Lyon. The talent is there, but something just not quite there yet for the Braves.
