Tennessee High Schools Reprimanded for Unapproved Softball Scrimmage

The old adage of “give em an inch, and they will take a mile” proved to be true this week in Tennessee. According to a report in the Murfreesboro Daily Journal, coaches and administrators from Riverdale High School and Oakland High School were reprimanded following an unapproved scrimmage this week.

The report states that the verbal reprimand came because the “scrimmage” was outside of the guidelines in Tennessee dealing with how to handle the first phase of extracurricular activities on high school campuses, especially as it pertains to practices and conditioning as part of the first phase of moving towards the re-start of high school sports.

The unapproved scrimmage involved the two teams, coaches, umpires, and fans, without any admission charged.

The paper’s report cites two violations as a result of the scrimmage:

• Only participating students, coaches, trainers, teachers, etc., directly involved in the activity itself (are allowed). No spectators may attend.

• All exhibitions, camps, scrimmages, etc., involving multiple teams, groups, bands, or other entity are prohibited.
