Madisonville-North Hopkins did not have to look far to find its new boys basketball coach. In fact, the school looked just up the road a few miles and snagged Jon Newton away from region rival Webster County.

The school announced the selection Monday afternoon.

Newton spent nine years at his alma mater, taking over the program for the 2011-2012 season. During his time at Webster County, Newton had a record of 186-93. His teams won at least 20 games in four seasons, reached the regional tournament six times, and made it to the regional final twice, losing to Hopkinsville in 2015 and to Madisonville-North Hopkins in 2020.

Newton replaces Matt Beshear, who stepped down following the 2019-2020 season after eight seasons on the job. Beshear led the Maroons to back-to-back regional championships in 2019 and 2020. The 2020 Maroons had been expected to contend for the state title, but were denied that chance due to the Sweet 16 being canceled in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
