Eddie Gran called a wrong play at Tennessee but had a good reason for what happened

Okay now we do know that offensive coordinator Eddie Gran does sometimes get confused on the sideline and call the wrong play. Kentucky coach Mark Stoops confirmed that Monday — but with a reasonable explanation in our COVID world in 2020.

“To be totally honest, we had a miscommunication (at Tennessee Saturday) – and we can chuckle about it now but I promise you it wasn’t funny at the time – we had a miscommunication on, I want to say, the second play of the game when Eddie’ glasses … he was so hyped up,” Stoops said Monday.

“He had that mask on and his glasses got all fogged up and he called a formation wrong. He called a play wrong. He felt so bad because he could not see his play chart, so that put us in third-and-long early.”

I wear glasses and I have no doubt that can happen because it seems like my glasses stay foggy when I am wearing my mask. Thank goodness I don’t have a national TV audience watching or a team depending on me being able to read what is in front of me.

Of course, Gran wasn’t the only one that made a mistake. Senior receiver Josh Ali made one in the first half that might have cost UK a touchdown on a screen pass.

“We had the fumble on the screen we had to Josh. I felt like he missed a cut. If he cuts it inside he may have scored, instead it turns into a (fumble),” Stoops said.

However, Kentucky’s offense got dominant in the second half when it put together two long scoring drives to squeeze the heart out of Tennessee.
