Preparations for winter and spring high school sports at Christian County and Hopkinsville have been stopped for the next couple of weeks. Officials with the Christian County Public School District announced Wednesday afternoon some athletic, extracurricular, and other after school activities will be suspended for two weeks.
The shutdown will run from November 5th through November 20th.
District Communications Director John Rittenhouse said the suspension comes from COVID-19 exposure concerns as case numbers continue to increase across the county and state. While the announcement does allow Hopkinsville and Christian County to participate in the football playoffs beginning November 13, the Christian County-Caldwell County football game for this Friday night has been canceled. Hopkinsville was not scheduled to play Friday night.
The big question for the moment could be how the decision will impact the start of the basketball season for both Hopkinsville and Christian County. The basketball season is scheduled to open November 23, just three days after the shutdown period is currently scheduled to end.
According to the statement issued Wednesday, beginning Thursday and lasting through Friday, November 20, winter and spring sporting practices, as well as any school or district-sponsored extracurricular activities, are suspended.
Rittenhouse added the vast majority of COVID-19 cases, and quarantines have originated from extracurricular activities. The district will reassess the district health situation before Friday, November 20, and decide on if it needs to be extended or not.
