As of Tuesday morning, a total of 16 teams had decided not to participate in the Kentucky high school football playoffs. However, teams expected to have a chance to make a deep run into the postseason are, for the most part, not the teams electing not to play.

A look at the list of teams that have withdrawn as of Tuesday morning shows that 12 of the 16 that have pulled out are #4 seeds in the opening round of play. One of those teams actually finished 5th in their district, but due to the fact that there is a Louisville district with only three teams, was scheduled to play in the opening round against the team that could arguably be labeled the best team in Kentucky.

Three teams seeded at #3 have elected not to participate in the playoffs.

One #2 seed made the decision to not take part. That was Mason County in the Class 3A playoffs.

As of Tuesday morning, there were no #1 seeds that had elected to withdraw from participation.

Teams opting out are coming from across the board in classes:

Class 6A – 3
Class 4A – 3
Class 3A – 2
Class 2A – 3
Class A – 5

As of Tuesday morning, Class 5A was the only division to not have a team opt out of the playoffs.
