The total number of teams electing not to play in this week’s opening round of the Kentucky high school football playoffs has continued to climb as the week has gone on. With Louisville Ballard and Harrison County announcing their decisions not to participate, the number has grown to a total of 22 teams as of Thursday afternoon.

By far, most of the teams pulling out have been in the #4 seed position. Of the 22 teams that have announced their intentions not to play, 15 are teams that were seeded #4 and had to face a #1 seed in this week’s opening round.

Four teams deciding not to play were #3 seeds that would have been on the road for the opening round of play. Three teams that were #2 seeds and would have hosted a #3 seed this week have withdrawn from the playoffs.

As of Thursday afternoon, no team that was seeded #1, which is guaranteed to have at least two home playoff games, has made the decision not to play.

The playoffs get underway with one game Thursday night. Most games are set to be played Friday. Three games are currently on the schedule for Saturday.

As of 2:30pm
