Shoulders Sharp on the Mound in Lyons’ Win Over Scott County

Lyon County’s Jackson Shoulders threw six strong innings and drove in a pair of runs to help the Lyons to a 9-2 victory over visiting Scott County on Thursday.

The Lyons move to 2-0 on the season with Caldwell County scheduled to visit Eddyville on Friday.  The Cardinals drop their second in a row to start the year after a 15-0 loss to McCracken County on Wednesday.

Brody Williams doubled in the bottom of the first and eventually came home on a Scott County error to give the Lyons an early 1-0 lead.  The Lyons tacked on 2 more in the bottom of the second when Brady Darnall singled in a run and came home on a single by Gunnar Bingham.

Shoulders cruised through the first five frames, facing only 19 batters and yielding a single hit.  Zane Patton led off the 6th with a double and came home on a sacrifice fly to get the Cardinals on the board.  Connor Ramsey came through with a 2-out RBI single to bring in a run and cut the Lyons’ advantage to 4-2.

Trey Courtney came on in the 5th for the Cardinals in relief of starter Evan MacCallum and he got into trouble in the 6th with back-to-back walks and a single by Lyon’s Travis Yancy.  Bingham scored on a passed ball before Shoulders singled to bring in 2 for a 7-2 score.  Corey Cissell hit a 2-out single to drive in a pair for the final 7-run margin.

Shoulders allowed 2 earned runs on 4 hits with a walk and 6 strikeouts.  Cissell came on to get the final 3 outs.

MacCallum lasted 4.1 innings for the Cardinals, allowing 4 runs, 3 earned, on 7 hits with a pair of walks and 2 strikeouts.  Courtney walked 2 and struck out 2 in an inning of work, yielding 2 runs, 1 earned.  Jaxon Saylor got the final 2 outs of the 6th, allowing 3 earned runs on 3 hits with 2 walks and a couple of strikeouts.

Williams, Bingham, and Shoulders each had 2 hits for the Lyons, with Cissell and Shoulders each driving in a pair.  Darnall had a hit and an RBI.
