Lady Lyons Struggle at Dan Cummins Classic

It was a tough trip to Georgetown Saturday for the Lyon County Lady Lyons. Seeing action against some of the top teams in the state in the Dan Cummins Softball Classic, one of the top in-season events of the softball season, the Lady Lyons suffered a trio of tough losses.

In the opener, Lyon County was limited to one run as Scott County edged out the Lady Lyons 2-1.

Scott County scored both of their runs in the bottom of the third.

Lyon County would cut the lead in half in the top of the 4th inning. Hadlie Butler singled to score Katelyn Dykes.

However, Lyon County could not mount another scoring threat after that point, and the game was called due to time limit with Scott County batting in the bottom of the sixth.

Katelyn Dykes led the Lady Lyons going 2-3 with a double and a run scored. Calista Collins, Lauren Davis, and Hadlie Butler had the other three hits for the Lady Lyons.

The second game of the day saw the Lady Lyons run into a buzz saw. That buzz saw was in the form of Oldham County pitcher Kalee Rose. Rose pitched five of the six innings played, giving the Lady Lyons just one hit as Oldham County rolled to a 10-0 win.

Rose had a perfect game going until Gracen Wynn singled in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lyon County’s only other hit was a two-out single from Calista Collins in the bottom of the 6th inning.

The Lady Colonels would score the only runs they really needed in a four-run third inning. Their offense would pound out 12 hits in the game.

The final game of the day saw McCracken County jump out to a 9-0 lead and then hold on for a 10-6 win over the Lady Lyons. The Lady Mustangs got a run in the first, three in the second, and five in the third to get the early big lead.

Lyon County made a move to rally with a five-run bottom of the 4th inning to cut the lead to 9-5. The Lady Lyons took advantage of a walk and two Lady Mustang errors in the inning.

McCracken added an insurance run in the top of the fifth off a Lyon County miscue to extend the lead back out to 10-5.

Sydney Melton led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run, but that would be the end of that inning’s rally, and the game was then called on time limit.

Melton finished the game 2-3 with the home run, a double, and an RBI, and two runs scored. 8th grader Lilly Perry was 2-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

With the losses, Lyon County now falls to 5-6 on the year. They are back in action Monday evening at Crittenden County.
