William Lubas followed his region title cross country run with an 8th place finish Saturday at the Kentucky Class 2A State Cross Country Meet.
The Fort Campbell junior covered the 3.1-mile course in 17:50, finishing 51 seconds behind the race winner Natnael Weldmich of Beechwood. Lubas got out to a quick start, running in the top 10 for most of the race.
Lubas’ finish is the first top-10 medal for a Fort Campbell runner at the state meet since Tony Duran came across the finish line in seventh place in 2008.
Joshua Blanton was the second Fort Campbell runner across the line in 137th place in 21:06. Amari Waddy was 140th in 21:09.
James Fisher was 216th followed by Brock Sharp in 218th, Gunner Principle in 242nd place, and Scott Bricker in 253rd.
As a team, Fort Campbell was 23rd in the standings but was 23 points away from a top-20 finish.
For the ladies, eighth-grader Hannah Corrales was Fort Campbell’s lone runner. She finished in 132nd place with a time of 25:36.
For the second straight year, the state meet was run at the Bourbon County Park after decades at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Runners had to traverse wet and muddy conditions that were the result of rain that fell all day Friday and early Saturday.
