Caldwell County senior Jabrion Spikes erupted for 43 points and 16 rebounds, and his Tigers held off Arlington, Tenn., 76-71 in overtime Monday night in the West Kentucky Hoops Classic in Princeton.
Spikes, who had 44 points in a win over Bethlehem just six days earlier, was 17 of 28 from the floor in leading Caldwell to its sixth win in its last seven outings.
Caldwell (6-2) led for much of the contest, but could not make an eight-point lead with 1:30 left in regulation stand up.
Instead, Arlington (6-4) got 3-pointers from Karl Burroughs and Aidan Moskovitz — the latter coming with just 11 seconds left — as part of a 10-2 run to tie the game at 62-62.
Zavy Bumphus had put Caldwell up 60-52 with a 3 of his own with 1:40 to play in regulation.
Caldwell went back to work building a lead in overtime, scoring the first 10 points to go up 72-62 with 1:31 following two Spikes free throws.
Again, though, Arlington made things interesting late. Another 3-pointer by Burroughs started a 9-2 run that cut the gap to 74-71 with still 41 seconds remaining.
But this time Caldwell held on, getting a free throw from Isaiah Joyner with 18 seconds left, then another free throw from Spikes with seven seconds to go to finally finish off the win against the Memphis-area squad.
Spikes was selected Caldwell’s Player of the Game after his big performance. Caldwell also got 12 points from Collin Whittington and nine from Bumphus.
Burroughs was the Arlington Player of the Game, finishing with 23 points and five steals. Moskovitz added 13 points.
Meanwhile, Spikes’ 43-point effort marked the 17th time a Caldwell County Tiger has scored more than 40 points in a game. Matt Fraliex holds the school record with 49 points at Webster County on Feb. 20, 2007.
