Trigg County held on late to knock off Clarksville Northeast 49-47 and advance to the semifinals of the Roy’s BBQ/First Southern National Bank Classic Tuesday in Russellville.

The Wildcats will play the host Russellville Panthers Tuesday night at 8 pm. Trigg beat the Panthers 50-49 in Cadiz last week.

A third-quarter flurry put the Eagles into the lead 37-35 after three quarters but Jhaden Vaughn scored eight of his 10 points in the final quarter to lift the Wildcats to the win.

Trigg survived another shaky performance at the charity stripe – 10 of 22 – in moving to 5-4. However, the Wildcats got a boost off the bench from Jerimyah Shearer, who knocked down three first half 3-pointers and finished with 11 points. Kendric Adams led Trigg with 13 points.

Trigg County jumped out to a 16-9 lead after one quarter and led 25-22 at halftime.

The game was the first-ever between the schools, leaving Rossview as the only Clarksville school Trigg has never played in basketball.

Russellville was scheduled to play Hancock County in the first round Tuesday, but the Hornets pulled out of the event due to COVID protocols.  As a result, Northeast received a bye into Wednesday’s consolation final.
