SPOTLIGHT ATHLETE – Jabrion Spikes

Jabrion Spikes sent 2021 out in style and has put 2022 on notice.

The Caldwell County senior has twice flirted with the school’s single-game scoring record in the first month of the basketball season. He scored 44 points against Bethlehem High on Dec. 21 and added a 43-point outburst just six days later in a win over Arlington, Tenn.

Spikes should become Caldwell County’s latest member of the 1,000-point club in late January if the averages hold up. He enters 2022 scoring 27 points a game and averaging 10 rebounds while shooting 60-percent from the field.

His athleticism in the paint makes him a nightmare matchup for opponents with nearly half of his rebounds on the offensive end.

For Spikes, the light bulb on just how good he could be at basketball went off during his eighth-grade year. He bided his time alongside players like Derrin Boyd, Tripp Branch, and Adarius Riley. Now that they have moved on, Spikes is asserting himself as one of the region’s top players.

The college recruiting process is heating up as well as Spikes has to balance on-court production with off-court visits and talks with coaches.

No Caldwell County basketball player has scored 50 points in a single game. Matt Fraliex scored 49 in 2007.  Dustin Cash and Fraliex have each scored 48.

Now the race for Spikes is on to see what he reaches first — 50 points in a game or 1,000 points in a career.
