Jabrion Spikes scored 28 of his game-high 42 points in the second half to help Caldwell County end its long losing streak to Christian County.

The Tigers’ 64-50 triumph was its first win ever over the Colonels at the CAB gym in Princeton.

The Colonels had taken 21 straight games from the Tigers dating back to February of 1988 — almost 34 years.

Christian (4-8) led by as much as six points early in the contest as it tried to continue that string.

But Caldwell (7-3) surged ahead in the second quarter. A 3-pointer by Zavy Bumphus tied the game at 19-19.

Two Spikes free throws pushed the Tigers in the lead, then a 3 from about 28 feet by Spikes gave Caldwell a 24-19 advantage.

The Tigers got to the break with a 26-24 lead, then never trailed in the second half.

Spikes dumped in 16 points in the third quarter alone to help Caldwell stretch its lead to 44-34 entering the final frame.

Christian got only as close as 50-43 in the fourth quarter before Caldwell put the game away at the free throw stripe.

The Tigers were 8 of 10 at the line in the final period and connected on 17 of 24 charity tosses for the night. Spikes went 14 for 18 at the stripe.

Christian made 10 of 14 free throws.

Spikes has topped 40 points in three of his last five games.

Bumphus finished with 12 points for Caldwell, including three 3-pointers. Dewey Riley had nine rebounds to go with four points.

Jordan Miles had 19 points to lead Christian. Derrell Bateman added 16.

The Colonels next host Murray on Friday in the second game of a girls and boys varsity twinbill.

The Tigers go to Madisonville-North Hopkins on Friday as part of a girls and boys 7th District doubleheader.

Before Tuesday, Caldwell’s last win over Christian County had come on Feb. 9, 1988. Michael Gray scored 27 points and grabbed 21 rebounds, and Steve Smiley had 20 points, as the Tigers defeated the Colonels 67-63 at Caldwell’s Butler Gym. The Colonels were ranked No. 8 in the state entering that contest.

Christian avenged that loss in the 2nd Region tournament later that season, beating the Tigers 74-59 in the semifinals at Hopkinsville High School.
